Trees add greenery to the scene, and a person walks alongside a child riding a tricycle. The houses feature white-framed windows and doors, with some displaying climbing plants on their walls.

We've joined a group of dynamic businesses building a ‘Garden Village for the 21st century’.

Welborne – a development just north of Fareham, between the South Downs National Park and the Hampshire coast – will comprise 6,000 new homes, shops, schools, woods, parks, business premises and healthcare facilities, in a modern, sustainable community.

The first phase of construction is due to start in early 2024, with Thakeham chosen by lead developer, the Buckland Group, as one of three housebuilders to deliver the first 600 homes.

Along with CG Fry & Son and Pye Homes, we will start work on this remarkable development and partnership that is, in every aspect, in keeping with the company’s commitment to community creation, sustainability and quality.

The houses are two-story buildings with chimneys and large windows. Trees line the street, adding shade and greenery to the area. In the foreground, there is a large grassy space with a few people walking and enjoying the open area.

Rob Boughton, our CEO said: “Everything we do is focused on the communities we create and the wellbeing of those within them. Welborne is an opportunity to build a generation-spanning, sustainable community, a great place to live.”

“We are likewise committed to the highest calibre workmanship whilst creating jobs and training opportunities in the housebuilding industry for local people.  Importantly, all the homes that we build at Welborne will also be zero carbon.”

Architecturally inspired by the early 19th Century developments in the local town and cities, the homes have been designed with a fabric-first approach to ensure that the carbon emissions from heating, lighting and cooling are zero or lower.

Led by the Buckland Group, a group of 30 businesses will be involved in the delivery of Welborne, driven by a shared resolution that community, high-quality materials and attention to detail will create an exemplar to stand the test of time – a Garden Village for the twenty-first century.

John Beresford, Managing Director of Buckland Development Ltd, who led the housebuilder selection process explains, “At Welborne we have formed partnerships in a new kind of business model where Buckland shares in the risk and reward with our build partners. Our three partners won’t pay for the land until the homes are sold, which means that smaller, quality-driven builders – such as Thakeham – are able to build schemes that would have normally been reserved for large-volume builders.”

Rob Boughton concludes, “The Buckland Group, has committed to an innovative model of build partnerships designed to deliver a context of cohesive architecture using the highest quality building materials, and incorporating variation through considered build detailing.”

“We firmly believe that Welborne will create a legacy we can all be proud of, and we’re excited to be part of this nationally significant development.”
